A new duo of exorcism movies are on their way. The Devil Inside, directed by William Brent Bell and The Possession, directed by Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch).
The Devil Inside has Isabella Rossi (Fernanda Andrade) finding herself involved in a series of bizarre exorcisms while she’s investigating what really happened to her now institutionalised mother whose own exorcism killed three women.
The Possession tells the story of a young girl who is possessed by an ancient evil spirit when she unwittingly purchases an antique box at a garage sale.
I am always sceptical when a new demonic possession movie comes around. I usually find myself watching them, and having that scepticism justified. While I do regard The Exorcist as easily one of the best horror movies ever made, I just don’t believe that there is anything new the genre can offer. I think it’s a shame and I’d really love to be proven wrong.Watching the trailer for The Devil Inside, I am seeing everything I have already seen before: the supposedly real life footage, the hand held camera (I will not rest until filmmakers stop using hand held cameras!), weird voices and contortions. I can only hope the story will make it all mean something new. Until then, I’ll cast a cynical eye on The Devil Inside and The Possession and vainly hope either or both will be able to deliver. At least these are original scripts and no one is trying to remake The Exorcist. Hope I’m not speaking too soon on that.
The Devil Inside will hit US screens in early January, but as Cinemablend reports, The Possession is being held back until August 2012.
